Office Address, Service Area, Phone: Where a Plumber Really Works
Three signals on a plumber's website point to where it works. Each answers a different question, and our St. Petersburg data shows where each one stops being useful.
Rank plumbers by distance from St. Petersburg, then from Clearwater. Eight of the top 10 are the same companies. In the top 50, 41 match.2 Both cities are in Pinellas County, and their distance rankings draw on the same pool of plumbers.
The Office Address
The address says where the business is based. It is the anchor for public records, mail and license files. We cross-checked 82 plumber sites in St. Petersburg against state records. None used a mailbox-style address such as a PMB, a suite "#" or a P.O. Box.1
The address does not say where the trucks go. A plumber based in Clearwater can work in St. Petersburg every day. This is one reason the overlap above is so high.
An address can also attach to the wrong website. In our St. Petersburg list, 5 domains tied to local records belonged to plumbers in other states or other parts of Florida.1 More on that in How We Sorted 200 Plumbing Websites.
For our city pages, we use the address as the rule. A company appears on a city's page only if its office is inside that city.2 Without that rule, the St. Petersburg and Clearwater pages would be near copies.
The Listed Service Area
The service area is where the company says it works. It is the most common of the three signals: 84 of the 88 local plumber sites we crawled named the cities they serve. Only 10 named neighborhoods.1
A service area is a claim. It does not prove that the company has done a job there, or how often. A building permit is closer to proof of work at an address; see Reading a Building Permit.
Some sites name only a region. Ten plumber sites in our list said only "Tampa Bay", "Tampa" or another city such as Clearwater, Seminole or Sarasota.1 We did not count that as evidence of serving St. Petersburg. A person reviews those sites.
The Phone Area Code
Area code 727 was split from 813 in 1998 and 1999. It covers Pinellas County and west Pasco County. Code 813 kept Hillsborough County and east Pasco.3 Since February 22, 2022, code 656 can be issued in the same area as 813.4 The line does not follow the county exactly: Oldsmar, in Pinellas County, is served by 813.4
Among 91 St. Petersburg sites with zone evidence, the phone in our source records had these area codes:1
| Area code | Sites |
|---|---|
| 727 (Pinellas, west Pasco) | 77 |
| 813 (Hillsborough, east Pasco) | 3 |
| Toll-free (8xx) | 3 |
| Other codes, one outside Florida | 3 |
| No phone in source records | 5 |
| Total | 91 |
So a 727 number is typical, but it is not proof. The site with an out-of-state area code showed a St. Petersburg ZIP code. Toll-free numbers say nothing about place, because a chain uses one number for every city.1
Some companies publish a number per area: 12 of 88 sites did. Only 5 listed a separate emergency line.1
What Each Signal Shows
| Signal | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Office address | Where the business is based and registered | Where crews actually work |
| Listed service area | Where the company says it works | Whether it has done jobs there, or how often |
| 727 or 813 area code | Where the number was issued in Tampa Bay | Which side of the bay the company serves |
| Toll-free number | Nothing about place | Any city at all |
| Region only ("Tampa Bay") | The broad metro area | Any specific city |
How We Combine Them
No single signal decides. Our check ranks them by strength:1
- Strongest: the phone on the site matches the number in source records that already place the business in the city.
- Next: a ZIP code from the city in the address.
- Next: the city name next to "FL" or "Florida".
- Weak: a region name, or a 727 number with no other match.
For a homeowner, the same order works. Ask where the truck will come from. Check that the phone on the site matches the one in public listings. A checklist is in Before You Hire.
The St. Petersburg and Clearwater overlap comes from a distance-based ranking in our working database, measured Sep 30, 2026. It is not the final ranking on our pages.
Area codes come from phone numbers in our source records, not from calls. We made no calls.
Service-area counts come from what 88 websites say. We have not yet matched them to permits or completed jobs.
